BANI , JUNE 1: The fifth edition of the Shri Angat Kumar Memorial Cricket Tournament-2026 commenced with great enthusiasm on Sunday at Mashka Cricket Ground. The tournament was formally inaugurated by Basohli MLA Thakur Darshan Singh in the presence of a large gathering of players, sports enthusiasts, and local dignitaries.
According to the organizing committee, the primary objective of the tournament is to encourage youth participation in sports, keep them away from social evils such as drug abuse, and provide a platform for emerging sporting talent in the region.
As part of the opening day celebrations, special running competitions were organized for boys and girls in different age categories. In the Under-10 category, 150 boys and 70 girls participated, while the Under-14 category witnessed participation from 89 boys and 50 girls. The Under-17 races featured 60 boys and 35 girls, whereas 20 boys and 10 girls competed in the Under-19 category. Winners will be awarded cash prizes, T-shirts, and medals.
In the tournament opener, Narendra Eleven faced Sheetal Nagar. After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Narendra Eleven posted a massive total of 175 runs in the allotted 12 overs. In reply, Sheetal Nagar managed only 101 runs in 12 overs, handing Narendra Eleven a convincing 74-run victory.
The second match of the day produced a thrilling contest between Royal Strikers Siyalag and Sewa-II Dam. Batting first, Royal Strikers Siyalag scored 119 runs in 12 overs. Chasing the target, Sewa-II Dam held their nerves to reach 126 runs in 11.4 overs, securing a dramatic one-wicket win.
Speaking on the occasion, Club President Bittu Kumar said that tremendous enthusiasm is being witnessed among players and sports lovers regarding the tournament. He stated that the event aims to provide local youth with opportunities to showcase their talent and motivate them towards sports. He urged all participants to play with true sportsmanship and assured that the organizing committee is committed to making the tournament successful and memorable.
Addressing the gathering, MLA Thakur Darshan Singh said that sports are one of the most effective means of guiding youth in the right direction. He noted that such events help nurture local talent and play a significant role in keeping young people away from social evils like drug abuse. He also extended his best wishes to the organizers for the successful conduct of the tournament.
